Come To Me Part 2

by Apr 8, 2020

Yesterday we read and peeled back Matthew 11:28 and today we turn to verse 29 and 30.

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

After His invitation to “come to me”, he pivots and tells us how the soul can find rest: take my yoke- A yoke is a long piece of wood tied across the necks of two animals such as oxen, in order to make them walk close together when they are pulling a plow.

You see his invitation was an invitation to be His disciple and to walk thru life together with Him. Then he gives us a word pic of His character- He is gentle and humble- not a taskmaster, not a slave-driver-He is gentle and humble friend and guide.

Then as His disciples, walking together with Him, our souls may find rest-renewal, blessed quiet, peace. And finally he adds that His yoke is easy and burden is light. Why? Because some might think that they will lose their freedom, lose certain pleasures, be bound by a bunch of rules to follow; in other words being a disciple becomes itself a burden. But absolutely not. Trusting in Him, and following Him makes the suffering and uncertainties and pain of this life on earth not just tolerable, but actually easy and light. I love the way Matthew Henry put it in his commentary on these verses:

“All who thus come will receive rest as Christ’s gift, and obtain peace and comfort in their hearts. But in coming to him they must take his yoke, and submit to his authority. They must learn of him all things, as to their comfort and obedience. He accepts the willing servant, however imperfect the services. Here we may find rest for our souls, and here only. Nor need we fear his yoke. His commandments are holy, just, and good. It requires self-denial, and exposes to difficulties, but this is abundantly repaid, even in this world, by inward peace and joy. It is a yoke that is lined with love.”

The Coronavirus pandemic is difficult on many levels. It has raised even more uncertainties about the future, poses a significant health risk, and has through the media’s coverage uncovered much suffering around the world. But our hope and peace is found in Jesus Christ.

Meditate on these 3 short verse. Better yet, memorize and recite them daily. Give your soul the medicine and immune booster it needs daily.

God bless you.
