Come To Me Part 1
Hi everyone. I want to share some good news with you since there is so much bad news and fake news these days. It is a message of hope and peace and truth. You can find it in Matthew 11:28-
Jesus said, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.
Such a short, yet powerful statement. Let’s break it down so we capture the essence of the message.
- Jesus himself gives an invitation: come to me (that is the gospel presentation, Amen?)
Why me? (that is why Jesus?) Because he alone is The Way The truth and the Life. Those who have seen Him, have seen the Father. The only way to the Father is through Him, Jesus Christ the Lord.
- Then he clarifies to whom the invitation is for: The invitation is for ALL. Those who are lost and those who are saved. You see the gospel is for all people. Salvation is exclusive because only those who believe and follow Him receive his gift and are clothed in His righteousness. But the gospel is for all people.
- He then specifies what kind of people- those who are weary and heavy laden or carrying heavy burdens. Why weary and burdened? Burdens may take many forms- the guilt and shame of sin; fear and terror of the unknown- perhaps the pandemic is the cause today; anxiety and depression due to hurtful words and actions. You see burdens lead to anxiety, fatigue, restlessness and insomnia, even physician symptoms and illness. Jesus understood that.
- Finally he tells his targeted audience- I will give you rest. Now that is a bold statement!
We tend to think about rest from a physical viewpoint but there is also a rest for our emotions and our spirit. The rest is a call for our souls to rest in Him. The soul is comprised of the mind, will, and emotions.
During these difficult days this verse/appeal/promise should bring you peace, hope and joy.
Tomorrow I want to add the next 2 verses because it helps us to better understand and appreciate verse 28.
